Frequently Asked Questions

Bitcoin halving is a programmed event that cuts the block reward (new BTC created per block) in half approximately every 4 years (210,000 blocks). This reduces the rate of new Bitcoin entering circulation, making Bitcoin progressively scarcer over time until the maximum supply of 21 million is reached around 2140.

Bitcoin halvings occur every 210,000 blocks, which works out to approximately every 3 years and 10 months to 4 years, depending on the average block time. The four halvings to date occurred in November 2012, July 2016, May 2020, and April 2024.

The fifth Bitcoin halving is expected around March-April 2028, at block 1,050,000. The block reward will drop from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. You can track the exact countdown on our Halving Countdown page.
