Market cycle top detection using moving averages
The Pi Cycle Top indicator uses two moving averages to predict Bitcoin market cycle tops with remarkable accuracy.
Signal: When the 111-day MA crosses above the 350-day MA x 2, it signals a potential market top.
This indicator has historically identified all major Bitcoin cycle tops within days of the actual peak.

The Pi Cycle chart plots two moving averages: the 111-day SMA (short-term trend) and the 350-day SMA multiplied by 2 (long-term trend × 2). The signal is a crossover — when the 111-day line crosses above the 350×2 line, historically Bitcoin is near or at a cycle top.
A fresh crossover doesn't trigger instantly with price movement — it requires both moving averages to converge, which takes months of sustained price appreciation. The indicator is not noisy: over 15 years, only four crossovers have occurred.
If you see the 111-day line racing toward the 350×2 line, cycle-top risk is elevated. Consider reducing leverage, taking partial profits, or tightening stops. If the lines are far apart — as they have been for most of Bitcoin's history — the indicator is simply not signaling anything.
Since 2011, the Pi Cycle Top indicator has produced four crossovers: April 6, 2013 (3 days before the $230 mid-cycle top), December 3, 2013 (1 day before the $1,238 cycle peak), December 16, 2017 (same day as the $19,345 peak), and April 12, 2021 (1 day before the $63,558 interim top — but 7 months before the eventual $67,549 ATH that preceded a 57% correction to $29k).

Pi Cycle's reliability for 2013 and 2017 is exceptional — every signal hit within 1 day of the actual peak. The November 2021 ATH, however, did NOT produce a fresh Pi Cycle crossover — the April 2021 signal was already in place, price corrected 57%, then rallied to a new ATH without a new signal. If you were waiting for a confirming crossover before acting on the November peak, you missed it entirely.
A fair read: Pi Cycle has reliably flagged major local tops, but the relationship between its signal and the cycle's absolute peak has varied. Treat it as a yellow light — a reason to reduce risk — not a green/red trigger.
Only four confirmed signals in 15 years. That's a tiny sample. Claims of statistical reliability are overstated — the indicator could be coincidental, or the underlying dynamics could shift.
Pi Cycle only signals tops, never bottoms. It provides no accumulation-zone guidance. Pair it with the Power Law support band or MVRV Z-Score for bottom signals.
The indicator is retrospective by construction. Moving averages are lagging indicators, and a crossover only confirms after price has already moved substantially. You can't act on "Pi Cycle is about to cross" — by the time you see the crossover, you've already ridden part of the top.
The 2021 cycle broke the pattern. Whether due to ETF demand shifting timing, deeper liquidity, or institutional allocation changing market structure, the traditional Pi Cycle signal did not mark the November 2021 ATH. This is the same pattern the Power Law shows: late-cycle dynamics have changed.
